BOTANICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Umbrelliform evergreen conifer reaching 25/30 meters in height, not particularly long-lived it can reach up to about 200/250 years.

The trunk is erect, in old specimens it is often bifurcate at a certain height, forming in the case two distinct umbels, the bark in young plants appears smooth and ash-colored, then over the years it becomes cracked and fissured into large elongated reddish-gray plates, young twigs are glabrous green then in years yellow-greenish.

The foliage is globular in young plants until 15 to 30 years of age, while in adult plants it takes on the clear umbelliform shape.

The leaves consist of flexible needles in bundles of two, 10 to 12cm. long, light green in color and remain up to two three years on the plant.

The stroboli (pine cones) roundish in shape with a diameter of 9/11cm. containing the seeds (pine nuts) that are protected by a hard shell and covered with a black powder. A heliophilous, thermophilous plant that prefers loose and sandy soils, drought-resistant it is capable of vegetating on very different soils from coastal sandy soils to calcareous and rocky soils up to around 800 meters above sea level. Its range extends from Crimea to Portugal and Algeria along the entire Mediterranean coastal strip.

In Italy it is a widespread plant along the entire coastline and on the islands. In nature it is generally found in symbiosis with Tuber Borchii and also in truffle farming it turns out to be an excellent plant for its cultivation with excellent yields.
